Joe was born in Seattle on September 25, 1934, the second of four children born to Joseph and Helen (nee Steen) Ellerby. He met his wife Katie at a Lutheran singles group in Portland. They married in 1976, and lived in Gladstone for 43 years. Joe graduated from Grant High School and attended Portland State. He worked for 32 years in the carton industry as a printer for James River, then Georgia Pacific. He was a member of the pulp and paper workers union, Local 64. Joe enjoyed his home, family, gardening, spectator sports and news on television, and often discussed politics, the economy and the stock market with his son. He was a big Seattle Seahawks fan. Joe was a palm tree, sunflower, and vegetable raising enthusiast. Later, son Jason took over much of the palm tree care which still numbered into the hundreds. Joe was active at local senior centers, especially Gladstone Senior Center. Joe was preceded in death by his three siblings Mary, Robert and Richard. He is survived by his wife Katherine, son Jason Ellerby, daughter Holly (Heath) Goin and their children Gage and Helena, sister-in-law Geneva Ellerby, nieces and nephews. Joseph was placed to rest at Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Gardens. A memorial service and celebration of life is planned for Saturday, April 23rd 2022 at 1:00 pm at West Linn Lutheran Church. Memorial gifts are invited to the church, Gladstone Senior Center Foundation, or a charity of donor’s choice.
