Obituary of Disque Andrew Lunceford

Disque Andrew (Andy) Lunceford passed away suddenly on April 18, 2021 at the age of 53. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Disque and Joyce Lunceford. Born in Palo Alto, California, Andy lived an exceptional life, made more remarkable by the physical limitations he overcame. He would argue that everyone should be treated equitably and given the same opportunities as anyone else. At a time when some children were discouraged from pursuing a mainstream public education, it was an enormous source of pride to Andy that his mother, an educator, fought to have him included in the Napa public school system, where he flourished. Andy’s gift was his ability to connect with people on an emotional level. Andy graduated from Napa’s Vintage High School in 1987 and was so proud of being elected as their Homecoming King. He also participated in Special Olympics as a cross-country runner. After graduation, Andy lived independently and worked in the food service and wine industries. He was active member of the LDS church and volunteered extensively. One of the causes he was especially passionate about was advocating for differently abled persons. He participated in multiple trips to the California State capital in Sacramento to meet with legislators on behalf of others who were less capable than himself. Andy loved to dance, loved social gatherings, and people. He had an uncanny ability to remember movies and details about his favorite actors. He would surprise people with his knowledge of celebrities and famous people who might share their year of birth or have a name in common. He also had an enduring interest in photography and could be seen at most events accompanied by his ever-present video camera. Andy spent the last three years of his life near his father’s family in Milwaukie, Oregon. He was an extraordinary person and will be dearly missed. His family wishes to recognize and thank the following organizations that greatly contributed to his quality of life in California: the North Bay Regional Center, Aldea Children & Family Services, and Becoming Independent. In Oregon, the family is especially grateful for the help of Anna Hiser and Hunde Abebe and his incredible staff. Andy is survived by his sister, Jessica L. Porta, his niece Aurora Porta, his nephew, Robbie Porta, his uncle Frederick L. Lunceford, his aunts, Malena Turner and Jackie Lunceford, and his many cousins.
