Obituary of Lloyd Clayton Peterson

Lloyd was born in Brockton MA, the only child of Carl and Ethel Peterson. He proudly served in the Navy at the bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington D.C. While in the Navy, he learned to operate IBM machines, a skill that parlayed him first into part-time employment at Boston University where he pursued a Masters in Psychology, and then at graduation when BU made him the youngest administrator. Lloyd served on the faculty and administration as Director of Computing and University Registrar for 16 years. It was at BU that he met the love of his life, Christine Burtt; they married in 1955 and had two children. In the late 1960’s, Lloyd became the founding Dean of Administration at the Pittsburgh College System, eventually opening three campus locations. He moved the family to Portland in 1972 where Lloyd had accepted a position as the Vice President of Administration at Reed College. He later held positions at Chemeketa Community College, Oregon Health Sciences University and the Portland law firm of Sussman Shank. He was a member of the Milwaukie Lodge of Masons and Al Kader Shrine Masons. He was an avid golfer, boater and fisherman. He found time to volunteer at the Shriners Hospital for Children, referring to himself as the “VP of Toys”, and was honored as a Volunteer of the Year. In 2001 Lloyd and his wife moved to Willamette View Retirement Center where he was an active volunteer until the day he died. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife in 2004 and son Kurt in 2012. He is survived by his daughter Cheryl (Randy), daughter-in-law Teri and 8 grandchildren: Jeremy, Anna, Stephanie, Jacob, Jon, Isaac, Theo and Alex; 4 great grandchildren; his companion Bernice “Bunny” Hirtzel and the extended Watkins family. A memorial service and interment at Willamette National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
