Sadao Hosaka

Obituary of Sadao Hosaka

SADAO HOSAKA – OBITUARY Born – August 26, 1935 Died – November 27, 2012 Sadao Hosaka was born on August 26, 1935 in Fukuoka Japan. He was raised on a farm with his 9 brothers and sisters. His first life ambition was to become an Olympic swimmer until an accident cut short his dreams to bring home the gold. At the age of 20, Sadao left the family farm with his brother Sage to build a life for himself in America. Sadao was married to Sanae in 1961. The marriage was arranged by their parents and lasted for almost 51 years. Sadao was always known as a hard worker, he worked in many positions before taking over ownership of his restaurant, Kwan Yings Kitchen. As a restaurateur, Sadao developed a following for his home-style Chinese cuisine. His business not only survived but thrived during the 80’s recession as a result of his innovative bento style lunches. Even after retirement, he still has regular customers begging for his old recipes. To the end, Sadao enjoyed cooking his home-style goodness for family and friends. Sadao also enjoyed spending time with his family, creating bonsai trees, singing shigin music and gardening. Sadao was long challenged by heart problems. He had his first heart attack when he was 48 years old, his second at age 60 and then underwent major heart surgery at age 70. This year he celebrated his 77th year in life - the traditional Japanese Year of Joy. For his birthday this year, the family spent a week at the beach celebrating his life with love, laughter and, of course, a few hours of Korean soap operas. His last two weeks was spent on holiday in Japan with his children and grandchildren. He was able to show his grandchildren where he grew up, share his culture, and enjoy them relishing the experience. Flying home from this truly memorable family vacation, Sadao suffered a heart attack. The physician on board heroically attempted to resuscitate him but his heart was too tired and it would not come back. Before falling ill, Sadao conveyed to his wife, Sanae, that he was so happy and that he felt he had completed all of his life goals. Sadao is survived by his wonderful wife Sanae, his 3 children, Terry Hosaka, Joyce Hartje(husband Craig), and Paul Hosaka (all from the Portland OR metro area), his brothers Sage Hosaka (Portland, OR), Tsutomu Hosaka (Japan), Hachiro Hosaka (Brazil), his sisters Nobuko Nagai(Japan) and Hasako Hirota (Japan), and his lovely granddaughters, Megumi and Mikiko Hosaka (Hood River, OR).
